About Us

The Anglican Relief and Development in Zimbabwe (ARDeZ) is the humanitarian and development arm of the Anglican Church in Zimbabwe (ACZ). ARDeZ was established in 2008 at the peak of the Zimbabwean hardships to respond to the natural and manmade disasters. Rooted in the Anglican Church’s long-standing commitment to education, health, and community service, ARDeZ was created to translate the Church’s faith mission into practical, holistic action addressing both spiritual and material needs.

Operating under the ACZ umbrella, ARDeZ serves as a national coordinating agency linking five Anglican dioceses — Harare, Manicaland, Masvingo, Matabeleland, and Central Zimbabwe — through a network of diocesan development offices. From its headquarters in Harare, ARDeZ mobilizes resources, builds partnerships, and provides technical and coordination support for diocesan and community-based programs implemented across the country. This national structure allows ARDeZ to reach diverse contexts, from drought-affected rural communities to urban and disaster-prone regions.

Guided by a mission to build a healthy, just, and poverty-free Zimbabwe, ARDeZ’s core mandate encompasses humanitarian relief, sustainable livelihoods, gender equality, health promotion, and environmental resilience. Its faith-based identity, extensive church infrastructure, and strong community trust position it uniquely to empower people to thrive and fulfil their God-given potential.

These successes speak to ARDeZ’s unique positioning: rooted in the Anglican Church’s infrastructure and moral authority, operating nationally across diverse dioceses, committed to both relief and development, and embedded in partnership and capacity-building. Its origin as a response-and-development arm of the ACZ gives it a strong institutional base, and its vision and mission align with both faith motivations and development imperatives. Its scope — from emergency response to sustainable employment creation and climate resilience — shows a broad and ambitious programme-spectrum, and its geographical spread allows for both national coordination and local implementation.

As ARDeZ moves forward, the narrative of its origin, objectives, vision, mission, scope and spread establishes a strong foundation for its strategic planning. The documented successes provide credible evidence of impact and legitimacy, and the national Anglican infrastructure provides a base for further growth and transformational work. The next chapters of ARDeZ’s strategic plan will build on this heritage and position the organisation for deeper impact in a changing Zimbabwean development context.
